Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
