Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
