EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
